All employees of Central Government (excluding Armed Forces) and Central Autonomous bodies who have joined service after 1.1.2004 are mandatorily covered under NPS. Employees of State Governments that have joined the NPS and implemented NPS mandatorily through a gazette notification, for their employees who have joined after a cut-off date, are covered under NPS.
The Subscriber should submit a duly filled application in form CSRF 1, to his nodal office, i.e., DDO. The forms can be obtained from the website https://nps.kfintech.com or can be collected from the subscriber’s DDO.
The DDO will collect the registration forms, verify and attest the date of birth and employment details and forward the same to the associated higher level Nodal office i.e., PAO (for Central Government) or DTO (for State Government). The PAO or DTO, as the case may be, would forward the applications to the CRA. The CRA would verify the forms, digitize the same and generate a Permanent Retirement Account for the subscriber with a unique PRAN. After successful registration, the PRAN kit (PRAN Card,Subscriber’s data and Information booklet) will be dispatched to the Nodal Offices (PAO/DTO) for onward distribution to the subscribers.
PRAN i.e., Permanent Retirement Account Number is a unique registration number allotted to each subscriber in the CRA system. This number will remain with the subscriber as long as he is in the NPS system and will not change even if he shifts to another sector due to transfer or change of jobs etc. All transactions relating to a subscriber are identified using PRAN.
Yes, the application may be rejected, if the form is not filled up completely or properly or if the KYC documents are not acceptable. Rejection can happen either at the associated Nodal Office or at the CRA. Intimation of rejection is given to the associated Nodal Office and Subscriber.
The functions of the DDO in the registration of subscribers are:
1. The Nodal Office should be registered with the CRA, before it can accept registration forms from subscribers attached to it.
2. Providing assistance and guidelines in filling up of forms, for all employees who have joined after 1.1.2004 or other cut-off date.
3. Verifying the forms and ensuring that the forms are filled as per the guidelines.
4. Attestation of employment details and date of birth
5. Consolidation of applications from subscribers and forwarding them to the PAO (or DTO, in case of State Govt.), in lots (maximum 1000 applications per lot),    with a covering letter in Form S5
The functions of the DTO/PAO in the registration of subscribers are:
1. The DTO/PAO shall consolidate the Applications for allotment of PRAN received from different DDOs along with the DDO covering letter and submit it to CRA Branch along with a covering letter as per Form S6.
2. On receipt of PRAN kits from the CRA, the DTO/PAO will forward the same to the relevant DDOs
3. Distribution of PRAN kits to the subscribers by the DDOs, on receipt of the same from the DTO/PAO.
4. Providing assistance to the subscriber, if he/she wishes to know the status of his/her application and intimating the subscriber about rejection, if the form is rejected.
